Emergency refuge forms an integral part of a tunnelling project’s wider Emergency Response Plan (ERP). Fires, fall of ground, flooding, and the release of smoke and other forms of toxic gas are the types of incidents that can occur all too frequently, despite the high levels of planning and safety precautions in place. In these types of emergencies, where personnel become trapped without adequate ventilation and evacuation is no longer safe or practical, emergency refuge is designed to provide a secure ‘go-to’ area for personnel to gather and await extraction.

MineARC’s TunnelSAFE Range of Refuge Chambers are highly customisable to suit any project and can be built to comply with British Standard (BS EN 16191:2014) Safety Requirements for Tunnelling Machinery. They can also comply with the ITA’s “Guidelines for the Provision of Refuge Chambers Under Construction”.

  • TunnelSAFE Gantry Design

Providing safety at the rear of the cutting head infrastructure, MineARC TunnelSAFE Gantry Design (GD) Refuge Chambers offer a fixed safety solution for the life of the project.

Regardless of size constraints, MineARC Engineers can custom design and manufacture each refuge chamber to meet the specific needs of the project, without compromising on occupancy potential or safety features. – More information

Inside a TunnelSAFE Refuge Chamber, a number of vital life support systems combine to create a safe, ongoing environment for occupants. Systems include primary and secondary oxygen supplies, air conditioning systems, positive pressure systems, electrical systems, gas detection and CO/CO2 absorption systems (referred to as ‘scrubbing’ systems).

The MineARC Positive Pressure Maintenance System (PPMS) is a unique piece of equipment, designed to help maintain a safe, breathable atmosphere within the refuge chamber. When activated, the PPMS disperses measured quantities of compressed, breathable air into the chamber, maintaining a positive pressure at 200kPa while operating in standalone mode.
